RMS Student Poster Contest, 1/15/20

The Logan County Health Department, Population Health Promotion for Butler, Logan, and Simpson Counties, sponsored a poster contest for middle school students about the dangers of vaping.  This contest was sponsored by the same Kentucky Department of Public Health grant that purchased the 100% tobacco-free-campus signs in the fall.  They received the most entries from Russellville Middle School!  They chose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place award from each county that participated.  Therefore, before their fellow classmates, on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Russellville Middle School, Mrs. Kathy Thweatt, Health Educator II, presented certificates and Walmart gift cards to the following winners:  Anastasia Knight, First place, $50 gift card - 7th grade, Mr. Carter’s class; Raigan Fuston, 2nd place, $30 gift card –7th grade, Mrs. Holtgraver; and Gage Bollenbecker, 3rd place, $20 gift card - 7th grade, Mrs. Holtgraver.  Lifeksills Regional Prevention Center provided the gift card awards, and the grant will pay for the billboards.  Billboards will be displayed in all 8 counties.  The plans are to develop a billboard from the 1st place posters plus the 3rd place poster from RMS.  After the artwork is finished for the billboard, the posters will be given back to the schools for display.  RMS had 17 participants 6-7th grade:  Raigan Fuston, Alexis Runyon, Tryce Moore, Anastasia Knight, Gracie Bailey, Aiden Garrie, Grayson Beard, Gage Bollenbecker, Kadence Lee, Caleb Ragland, Noah Terry, Jayce Sparks, Abriyan Rodriguez, and Leland Minosky.  Mrs. Thweatt said, “Thank you to Elizabeth Dye and Russellville Middle school for the great participation in this project.  We would like to thank all of the schools and students that participated.  Research shows that peer-lead education can make a great impact on pre-teen and teens.”  Congratulations to each student, and thank you to their teachers that encourage them!
