Russellville Aero Space Team places 2nd in the National Air & Space Education Institute Wing Design Competition

Members of the Russellville Aero Space program competed this past Saturday, 5/14/16, in Somerset, KY.  Even though it was miserably cold, incredibly windy, and drizzly all morning, they did a great job of competing and received 2nd place in the National Air & Space Education Institute Wing Design Competition.  Based on the team's preliminary work, the team entered into this competition in 1st Place!  Conner High School, who has now won four years in a row, secured 1st again this year.  The RHS Aerospace class has been working on this for months.  Their entry is very good looking and flies very well.  The construction process is interesting.  Under the shiny blue covering, the wing is made of small strips of lightweight wood, like balsa.  It resembles the roof of a house before the shingles are placed.  They have worked very hard on their wing, design report, and other projects this year.  The teams get a bonus if they have a student pilot rather than the teacher or another adult.   However, this takes a lot of practice!  The Model Shop in Bowling Green was beneficial and “Travis” gave support and advice.  Team members include Bryce Bollenbecker, Kobe Kerr, Dillon Porter, Milam Watkins, and Phillip Wilkerson.  The RHS Aerospace Team is led by Mr. Scott Blackerby.  This program presents so many wonderful opportunities for our students to get involved in aviation and aerospace while still in high school.  We are very proud of this team and all their hard work this year!
