On Thursday, 9/8/16, at Russellville Junior/Senior High School, students in Mr. Chris Holloman’s 6th period Art class were busily working on the quilting project for the upcoming Friends of the Library, “A Community Reading” of the Autobiography of Alice (Allison) Dunnigan. The students, along with the expertise of Dr. Nancy J. Dawson, have devised a “not-your-typical” creative, wonderful quilt, as quoted from Ms. Martha Davenport. She stated these children have learned history from their hometown of Russellville, KY. Alice Dunnigan was born and raised in Russellville, and due to having the “determination of 15 bulls”, she is remembered as an advocate for civil rights and even later served at the Whitehouse during the Truman years. The Logan County Library will host events on Mondays, beginning October 3, through the 24th, that will provide opportunities to learn more about this intriguing woman. On October 3, at 6pm, the event begins with the Tour of Dunnigan Exhibit, West Kentucky African American Heritage Center, 252 South Morgan St., including discussion with the Allison Family and Friends. There will be a commentary on the book, The Way it Was, by author Nelson Weaver. The Russellville Urban Garden Project will also be planting a tree. On October 10, at 6pm at the Logan County Library, discussion will continue with chapters 1-7, and the Cedar Grove Rosenwald School by Clarence Gamble. This will be the event where the RJSHS students’ project of the quilt, in honor of Alice Dunnigan, will be unveiled by Dr. Nancy J. Dawson. October 17, at 6pm, at the Library, discussion will be on chapters 8-12, and there will be a lecture held by Dr. Alicestyne Turley regarding the Rosenwald Schools in KY. Dr. Turley is an Assistant Professor, African American Studies, with Berea College. The final event at 6pm at the Library, on October 24, will be the discussion of chapters 13-21, with a Dramatic Presentation and Commentary from Edito, Carol Booker, via SKYPE. Everyone is encouraged to participate, and Russellville Junior/Senior High School is honored to be included in these events.
