The Week Ahead at RJSHS 2/18 - 2/24

February 26th – RISD will be in school  

Monday, February 26th, originally designated a no-school day has been changed to an in-school day as a make-up day for snow. Several more days will be approved as make-up days as well during the February 19th Board Meeting.

 

Taking Extra Safety Measures

The RJSHS Faculty met with members of the Russellville Police Department to discuss school safety as well as procedures and scenarios for lockdowns, threatening intruders, and other situations during a school day. The entire school then participated in a school-wide lockdown drill supervised by Officer Kenneth Edmonds and done during a class transition time to simulate less-than-optimal timing for the drill. Students, Faculty, and Staff performed excellently and moved with urgency during the drill, displaying an understanding of knowledge of the steps to take in such a situation.

 

Matthew Wilkerson Earns Prestigious Interviews 

Russellville High School Sophomore Matthew Wilkerson has earned a chance to interview for admittance to BOTH the prestigious Gatton Academy at WKU and the equally sought after Craft Academy at Morehead State. Both schools place a high level of emphasis on Science and Math are regarded as two of America’s top preparatory schools in these areas. Mathew’s brother Phillip, a senior as well as junior Anna Shoulders are both already at the Gatton Academy.

 

Academic Team Headed to State!

Per Academic Team Coaches Donna Wilkerson and Jennifer Rogers, it was a great day of academic team competition at Madisonville North Hopkins High School on Saturday, as the RHS Academic Team finished as regional runners-up for the third consecutive year. The quick recall team of Adam Williams, Will Mullen, Benjamin Slack, Matthew Wilkerson, and Phillip Wilkerson were regional runners up; the future problem solving team of Jayden Hammer, Cassidy Farwick, Marta Hughes, Matthew Wilkerson, and Allison Sadler finished 4th, Phillip Wilkerson was the regional winner in science, Matthew Wilkerson placed 4th in science, Benjamin Slack was 4th in social studies, Will Mullen placed 3rd in arts & humanities, and Karlee Elrod came in 2nd in written composition. Although out of medal contention, Phillip Wilkerson also performed well in math (6th place), as did Maleah Buckner in language arts (7th).

 

 

Modern Woodmen, Roy’s BBQ, and Parents make Fundraiser a Success 

Parents, friends, and several community members all came together to make last Friday nights Senior Night game against Todd Co. a huge fundraising success! Donations from multiple sources helped RHS Athletics raise considerable funds for improvements and upgrades to the school’s weightroom as well as equipment needs. For many, it was a chance to get some face-to-face time with new football Head Coach Mikie Benton as well as with Superintendent Flener.

 

ACT Blitz Prep Begins this Week!

Beginning this week, through the diligent organizational efforts of Ms. Bethanie Hargett-Slack, all Juniors will begin a four week, 45 minute-a-day rotation of ACT Prep work. Students will rotate as groups through a battery of English, Reading, Science, and Math prep blitzes that will focus on ACT test taking strategies and skills. Mrs. Lauren Fynboe, Mr. Jeremy Bivins, Mr. Robert McLellan, Mr. Steven McGhee, and Ms. Hargett-Slack will all be working closely with all Juniors during this month long concentrated effort.

 

Opera comes to Russellville

RJSHS Art teacher Chris Holloman introduced his classes to another form of artistic expression this past Thursday when he was able to get Opera Singer Angela Fagella. Ms. Fagella visited the Arts and Humanities Class and sang a few Arias from Mozarts' operas. Mr. Holloma’s class were finishing up our unit on music and had looked at the film Amadeus while studying his music, making this opportunity a wonderful fit. The singer spoke with the class about her educational experiences and classical vocal training.  Mr. Holloman was able to meet Angela Tuesday night at the Russellville Arts Council meeting which Angela is planning to work with to offer additional musical and vocal opportunities in our community.

 

Upcoming Middle School Dance

March 2nd from 6 to 8pm, Russellville Middle will host a Spring Fling Dance for all students in grades 6-8. The dance will be held in the RHS foyer and will feature music, a selfie station, concessions, and other fun activities. The dance will serve as a fundraiser for rewards and field trips for the Middle School team.

 

Keep Those Bottle Tops!

The RJSHS Family Resource Center needs your help! They are asking that you please save your bottle caps from all Coke products and turn them in to Mrs. Debbie Browder at RHS. These will go a long way in helping with what appear to be deep budget cuts to the FRYSC by the most recently proposed state budget. Tops may be dropped off at the front office.

 

Sports Happenings                                                                                                                

Little League Evaluations on Saturday February 24th

Little Leaguers interested in playing this Summer should take note that Evaluations will take place this Saturday at the indoor facility at RHS. The facility is located behind the school, just behind the softball field. For more information on this, parents can contact Ethan Meguiar at [email protected]

 

Youth Basketball Gets an Administrative Boost

When the youth all-star Russellville basketball team made up of students from Stevenson Elementary as well as several Logan Co. feeder schools takes the court for practice, they are getting some pretty unique coaching. Superintendent Bart Flener, RHS Assistant Principal Cameron Jackson, and several others are all coaching this Spring. Both Flener and Jackson are longtime highly successful basketball coaches in the high school ranks and all have joined forces to ensure the foundation of Russellville Basketball is solid.

Archery

Over 600 archers from multiple schools filled the campus of Russellville Junior and Senior High School this Friday and Saturday. Coach Jeremy Rust and the RJSHS Archery team hosted the massive event that saw students shoot late into the night Friday and all day Saturday.

 

Basketball

The RHS Lady Panthers finished the regular season on a high note this past Friday as they took down Warren Central at Warren Central. The Lady Pathers will face Todd Co. this Tuesday Night in the 13th District Tournament at Logan Co. at 6:30pm.

The Boys team fell just short on the road at South Warren this Friday night. The boys will face Todd Co. as well in the District Tournament at Logan Co. on Tuesday at 8pm.  

 

Football

Football Winter Workouts continue this week for all players not involved in other sports. Workouts will be Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:20 – 4:30pm.
