Pennies for Patients

The Stevenson Elementary Family Resource Center and the SES K-Kids Club recently sponsored Pennies for Patients - a fund raising campaign to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The week of February 2 -6, featured daily themes which were designed to create an atmosphere of unity and awareness. Teachers and staff were given the opportunity to donate $5.00 to the campaign in order to wear jeans each day that week.  Monday was Team Up Against Cancer Day. Students and staff were encouraged to bring pennies to donate and to wear their favorite team jersey or colors. Any students bringing in one dollar to donate were treated to popsicles in their classroom that afternoon.  Tuesday was Sock It To Cancer Day. Students and staff were encouraged to bring nickels to donate and to wear crazy socks. Any students bringing in one dollar were allowed to wear pajamas to school that day.  Wednesday was We Don’t See Cancer In Our Future Day. Students and staff were encouraged to bring dimes to donate and to wear clothing depicting their future. Any student donating one dollar was treated to extra gym time on Thursday.  Thursday was the day students and staff were encouraged to wear gold, the color representing childhood cancer, and to bring in quarters. Any student bringing in one dollar to donate was allowed extra recess time on Friday. The wrap-up day on Friday, was Show Our Panther Pride Day. All were encouraged to wear black and gold and celebrate the week’s collection efforts. Homerooms collecting the most money were announced in Town Meeting. Mrs. Pedigo’s room came in first place with a total collected of $144.17. Three additional homerooms, Mrs. McKenzie’s, Mrs. Lowery’s, and Mrs. Reding’s rooms also collected over a hundred dollars each. The SES Family Resource Center provided a pizza party for each of these four homerooms to reward their efforts, and each of these homerooms will be recognized by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as Bronze Pennant winners.
