Leon Smith Named Interim Superintendent

Tonight, in a special called board meeting, the Russellville Independent School Board of Education has named veteran educator and former Panther Superintendent Leon Smith as acting superintendent of the southcentral Kentucky school district.  Smith had a very successful tenure as Russellville Independent School superintendent beginning in 2009 and serving until his retirement date in June of 2017.

Smith will direct the Russellville public schools until the board selects a permanent replacement for outgoing superintendent Bart Flener, who will complete his duties June 30th before transitioning to his new role as Green River Regional Educational Cooperative (GRREC) Executive Director.

Board Chairman James Milam stated, “We are honored that Mr. Leon Smith has agreed to serve as acting superintendent.  Since serving us for 8 years, he has continued to support the Panther nation.  His interest in our students and community has continued.  Mr. Smith will accompany us as we meet new challenges.”

Acting superintendent Leon Smith stated, “I feel humbled to have been asked by the Russellville Independent Board  to serve for a brief period of time during this transition period.  This is a district which is near and dear to my heart and I’m honored to contribute once again on behalf of the Panthers.”

Russellville Superintendent Bart Flener stated, “The district is in wonderful hands with Leon Smith at the helm.  I reflect with great appreciation on the mentorship he has provided for me during my tenure here in Russellville Independent Schools and I’m happy to hand the reins back to him”  This is great news that will provide continuity for our district during these uncertain times and I know that our board will be very conscientious throughout this process as we continue to Equip Panthers...For Life!
