The final year of high school is usually a stressful
and an extremely busy time for students. However, the Seniors at Russellville High
School aren’t joking around when it comes to being prepared for the future
ahead. The process of transitioning into
an independent adult can be overwhelming, but the teachers and staff at RHS are
assisting in every way they can to pave a road to success for the future
graduates. Since the start of the
school year, the Seniors have toured multiple universities, attended workshops,
received professional assistance from FAFSA helpers, and obtained access to
many college preparation resources. On Friday,
Oct. 26, SKYCTC recruiter, Rachel Finn, visited RHS and gave a presentation on
their college, and what it has to offer prospective students. SKYCTC, previously known as Bowling Green
Technical College, still remains as the most affordable 2-year-Associates’ University
in Kentucky. Tuition for 1 class is $500
and for an entire year is $4,000. SKYCTC
also accepts KEES money and over 75% of students attending the college receive
financial aid. Most college students
spend an average of $40,000 every two years at other colleges. It’s something to consider since it can be a
hassle to pay for college without going into debt. The school knows everyone isn’t good at timed
tests, so they don’t judge applicants based on their ACT score or their GPA. They offer placement testing to those who
might have scored below benchmark for Math, Reading, and English. Once a student submits an application, their
name automatically enters a registry for numerous scholarships. Work-study opportunities are offered to
students and can sometimes help pay for the entire tuition fee. Before the presentation ended, Ms. Finn left
the students with valuable advice: “At
this crucial time in your lives, you have to show initiative. Don’t wait to complete what seems hard right
now or you’ll end up regretting it in the end.” On that note, good luck to all the Seniors
that will be applying to college for the 2019-2020 year!
