Weekly Update Feb. 23, 2015

Good Sunday evening to everyone!

I certainly hope that we will see everyone on TUESDAY morning—weather permitting! There will be no classes held tomorrow for Russellville City Schools due to weather conditions. The expectation is for refreezing to occur tonight.

Swim News:

The RHS Swimming Panthers traveled to Owensboro on Friday, February 13, to compete in the Region 1 Swimming & Diving Championships. Representing our school at the regional meet was senior Eduardo Rodriguez, junior Kate Bouldin, freshmen Cole Celsor and Fernanda Rodriguez, and 8th grader Ben Slack.

All swimmers put up solid times with Slack swimming in the 100 fly and 200 IM. Both Rodriguez swimmers swam in the 50 and 100 free events. Bouldin’s events included the 200 free and 100 fly – earning a personal best in the 200 free. Celsor’s events were the 50 and 100 free and he earned a personal best in both of those events!

Coach Toni Hall is very proud of her swimmers and their accomplishments this season. She is already looking forward to next swim season.

Academic Team News:

The RHS Academic team competed last weekend in the Regional Governor’s Cup competition at Muhlenberg Co. The team came in 4th place overall with two students earning spots for the state competition in March. Those students are Phillip Wilkerson—2nd Place

Kendra Farlee—4th Place. We are extremely proud of this team as they have accomplished a great deal this year with new coach, Mrs. Jennifer Rogers. We look forward to their continued success during the state meet and beyond!

ACT---Attention all junior parents and students!!

We have one week left until the ACT testing date the 3rd of March!! As an educator and a parent, I cannot express enough the importance of this assessment to both parents and students. So much of a student’s after-high-school experiences, whether it is academically or athletically motivated, will depend greatly on his/her ACT scores. As sophomores, these students scored a school high composite score on the PLAN assessment—they have the ability to perform well!! Mrs. Hargett-Slack, Mrs. Fynboe, Mrs. Naylor and Mr. Blackberry have worked diligently for the past several weeks to provide content specific review sessions during AA for our juniors, but with the snow days, that is not going to leave a great deal of time for any more intensive review work. There are, however, multiple websites that will provide reviews, practice assessments, etc. for free. Please encourage your students to utilize free time this week for preparing for the ACT as much as possible!!

We will also be administering the Work Keys assessment on Wednesday for students who are third year students in their career pathways. The Work Keys assessment is also created by ACT and assesses applied math, locating information and reading for information. There are also free review sites for this as well. This assessment will also allow some of our seniors to obtain their career-readiness status before graduating. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need more information pertaining to either of these assessments.

RJSHS Jr. Beta

The state Jr. Beta convention was scheduled for this past week but was canceled due to the winter storms. We have received word that it will be rescheduled for the 23rd-25th of March at the Galt House in Louisville. Please contact Mrs. Mathis or Mrs. Fynboe for more information.
