Reality Store, 10/17/19

The Logan County Extension Office houses an annual event called “The Reality Store” for Russellville eighth and tenth graders to step into the lives of adults.  On Thursday, Oct. 17, the students rode a bus to the Extension Office and experienced a physical learning of the adult world.  Each student was given a career by a random draw, and they were directed to go from table-to-table to meet their needs of the lifestyle they were given.  It was interesting to see students give up so many sacrifices such as shampoo, streaming services, vacations, and even electricity to put money towards more important needs.  Some had the idea to get a second job to help pay for their needs or to get a loan from the bank.  Overall, it was an educational experience on how people live their lives every day, and it gave students a taste of what it is like in the “real world” outside of school and away from their parents' grasp.  It also helped them understand what their parents may go through with certain financial situations and what sacrifices they may take to provide the best life possible for their children.  A special thanks is extended to all the volunteers, community businesses, and organizers that were involved.  The Reality Store wouldn’t be possible without them!
