College and Career Readiness

At RJSHS, one of our major goals is for all of our students to graduate from
our school either college or career ready and in some cases, both college and
career ready. Everything we do from the time they enter our school until
they leave is to ensure that they are prepared to enter college or to enter the
workforce. We also have several programs and activities in place to help
us work specifically with our seniors to ensure they leave us prepared.
Although most students don’t receive the classification until their senior
year, we begin preparing students while in the middle school by either
providing rigorous learning opportunities to help students successfully meet their
ACT benchmarks or by preparing them to enter specific career pathways offered
by us and by the area technology center. Below is a graphic that depicts
how students can be declared college and/or career ready:

We began the school year with some of our seniors already declared college ready due to
meeting benchmarks on the ACT in the areas of math, reading and English.
We have added students to this list as the year progressed through one of the
many paths listed above. We recently completed the COMPASS assessments in
math and more students were declared college ready or got one step closer for
meeting the benchmark on that assessment. We will continue assessing
students this next week in the areas of reading and English. In the
upcoming months, our career and tech ed students will be completing their KOSSA
and Work Key exams along with some doing the exams for industry
certifications. Please encourage your seniors to take advantage of these
opportunities to improve their chances of success after graduation from our
school. Students who have the opportunity to take industry certification
exams are being provided that service for no cost at this time. This
opportunity is being provided by the district and we want to make sure students
use to it their advantage. We will also begin scheduling for next school
year soon. Our guidance department will be working with all of our
students to ensure they are taking courses and classes that will lead to them
being college and career ready by the time they graduate. If you have any
questions, please contact our guidance department.
