Weekly Updates

Good Sunday evening to all!

College and Career Readiness

--I have used this term a great deal in recent weeks and use it frequently with our
students as this has become one of our major focal areas for the middle and
high school students. We are continually planning and preparing courses
so that our students can be as prepared for college or a career after
graduation. I want to take this opportunity to discuss why this idea of
our students being college or career ready is important, not only to the school
but specifically for the students.

1. Meeting the ACT Benchmarks in math, reading and English is the main way to
becoming declared college ready. This benefits the student who is college
bound by allowing him or her to enter the college of their choice without
having to take remedial courses. If students do not meet this benchmarks,
they can still apply for admission to college and will likely be accepted but
admittance could be conditional which means the student would have to take
additional courses/classes due to not meeting those benchmarks.
Ultimately, this translates into more money and more time since they will be
required to take the remedial courses before taking the required courses for
specific degrees. Encourage your student to take advantage of the
programs that we offer to help ensure that they meet these established
benchmarks. Currently, we offer ACT prep assistance through an on-line
company (TCA) with our juniors who will take the ACT in March. Our
juniors have taken two practice ACT exams and have received student-specific
feedback and instructional plans that are individualized for each student based
on the practice assessments. If these students are utilizing this
feedback with the TCA program, we believe that overall student performance will
be impacted. We are working now on a plan for our sophomore students to
begin working on the TCA program, as well. The link for this program can
be found on the high school’s web page located on the district website.
Students can work on this program at any time they wish.

Mrs. Erica Cassady, a new teacher at RHS, is also offering after school sessions to
help students who want to improve their reading and English ACT
benchmarks. If your student is interested, please have them contact Mrs.
Cassady for more information. Higher ACT benchmarks can also increase a
student’s chance of receiving scholarships and other opportunities that
normally would not be available to them.

2. By law, if students do not meet ACT benchmarks in the areas of math, reading
and/or English, then we must provide them with senior transitional courses in
those areas so that they can be remediated for the COMPASS and KYOTE
assessments during their senior year of high school.

3. Career Readiness—students can be declared Career ready by completing three or
courses in a specific career pathway and by passing the appropriate assessments
for those programs. Many of our students will be eligible for an industry
certification at the completion of their specific pathways. Graduating
high school with a specific industry certification will only help improve the
student’s possible employment opportunities. We will begin working more
closely with our middle school students to help them identify pathways as early
as possible so that they can register for the necessary courses needed.

Finally, I have shared in recent weeks new students added to our original list of
college and career ready students. Below you will find the listing of all
our RHS Seniors who have been declared college and/or career ready at this
point. Please join me in congratulating these students on this
accomplishment and to praise them for the hard work they have put forth in
obtaining this honor.
