Weekly Update Jan. 12th, 2014

Good Sunday afternoon to everyone!

We would like to recognize and congratulate Senior TaCorian
Darden and Head Coach John Myers for being selected to participate in this
weekend’s Border Bowl at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg,
Kentucky. Coco was chosen to represent the Kentucky team
with Coach Myers asked to join the coaching staff for the event, as well. We are very excited for the representation of our school during this game.

The Border Bowl is a non-profit organization established to promote high school football in
Kentucky and Tennessee. The objective is to provide an All-Star Game featuring
the top players in Kentucky and Tennessee. This game allows players to have the
opportunity to play, practice, and battle it out for the rights to the border.
It also allows high school seniors an opportunity to gain additional exposure
and, perhaps, earn a scholarship for college. Each player must be nominated by
his coach. All player profiles are reviewed by a panel of coaches from their
home state to field the best possible team.

Players selected for the Border Bowl are treated as All-Stars from the time they check into camp until they leave for home. Each player receives a personalized jersey, food,
and lodging for the entire time at camp, insurance for all activities, a sweat
suit, t-shirt(s), honors banquet ticket, a Border Bowl Ring, and the
opportunity to meet numerous former NFL, CFL, and NCAA coaches.

Our RHS Archery
team was in action this past weekend, as well.
Congratulations to 6th grader Karlee Elrod on her 3rd
place finish in the girls division for middle school and to Senior Brian
Clinard on his 2nd place finish in the high school boy’s
division. The Russellville Archery team
will be hosting a tournament at RHS this weekend. Come out and support our shooting Panthers!!

The middle school academic team, under the leadership of Ms. Tina Shoemake, will begin District Governor’s Cup competition this week. The team will
compete in Future Problem Solving and composition events on Tuesday, with the
written assessments and quick recall team in action on Saturday. We wish them the best of luck and know that
they will represent us well as they have worked very hard over the past few
months to prepare. The high school
academic team will participate in the District tournament the following
week.

Also, I want to
remind everyone that per the school calendar, there is no school scheduled for
this Friday. We will also be out next Monday
in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day.
Enjoy the 4-day weekend!

Important
information from Mrs. Fynboe and Mrs. Osborne for Seniors and their
parents/guardians:

On Wednesday the
RHS Guidance Department hosted a FAFSA workshop for our students and parents
who had questions about filling out and filing a FAFSA document for financial
aid consideration in preparation for college applicants. During the workshop,
two representatives from Educational Talent Search coached students and
parents, helping them complete the document here at school in only a few
minutes. From the feedback we have received from both the students and
the parents who were able to participate, it was a wonderful experience and
opportunity, and all agreed that the time was well spent.

We know that,
coming off of winter break so quickly, many of you were not able to drop in
with such short notice, yet you are still interested in getting some assistance
with this task. One of the representatives has scheduled us for another
half day of coaching, here in the RHS library, for any student or family member
still needing some help. She will be here Monday (January 12th) from 11:00 until 2:00
to assist anyone still interested in some help. If you plan to attend or
would like your child to drop in, please bring your 2013 tax return
paperwork so that the forms can be filled out completely
; otherwise, one
section of the document must be saved and completed when these items are at
hand. This paperwork is to be filled out by you or your child and each
person is coached independently, just fyi.
J Because Ms. Manning has other
obligations that day, she has asked if you will schedule appointments with me
so that she can better assist those who are still needing some help. Just
reply to this email and I will pencil you/your child in. I am attaching
her message and contact information below if you should have any further
questions.

Mrs. Osborne has
also scheduled another day of FAFSA coaching that will occur on January 20th in the
RHS library from 7:30 until 3:00.
I am closing the library for
the rest of the school so that you may again come work with these
representatives to complete this important documentation. The FAFSA is a
document used by various financial aid agencies across the nation and is a
requirement for qualification of many scholarships, grants, and loans. It
is HIGHLY recommended that each college applicant or potential college
applicant fill one out, whether eligible for financial aid or not. For
more information regarding the FAFSA, please see the following website: https://fafsa.ed.gov/
