Weekly Update, August 29th, 2016

Good Sunday evening to all!

This Friday, the Russellville High School Football Team will host the Butler Co Bears for the 1st Annual KY National Guard Border Bowl.  During this event, we have several tributes honoring our military, specifically our KY National Guard.  We hope that we can get a large number of current and/or retired members to honor during our game.

The Russellville Middle School Lady Panther Softball program is off to a strong start this year.  Led by Coach Ryan Davenport, these hard-working Lady Panthers have accumulated several nice wins so far this season!  If you haven’t seen them in action, you will have two opportunities to see them in action on the Lady Panther field this week!

On Thursday morning, we will administer a practice ACT exam to all of our current Freshmen.  The purpose of this data is to give the student an idea of where he or she stands with this important assessment and it will help us design and develop strategies to help students be more successful on this assessment.  Why is the ACT such an important exam?

1.        The first line of defense:

University admissions officers receive thousands of applications each year. Each application is evaluated by a human being, and there are only so many hours in the day. So, they need to narrow down their piles of applications to the really serious contenders. The quickest way for them to do so is to look at GPAs and SAT/ACT scores. If your scores aren’t competitive, your application could end up in the denied pile even before your essays, recommendations etc. get read.

2.        Proof in Numbers:

GPAs and SAT/ACT scores provide a glimpse into how you will perform with the rigor of courses once you get accepted into University. By the time you apply for college, your GPA is not going to change too much. However, your SAT/ACT score has a lot of room for improvement! By increasing your score, you can show university admissions officers that you are capable of working hard, performing well in stressful situations and learning a large amount of content in a short period of time.

3.        Money, Money, Money:

Universities award millions of dollars in financial aid every year. Merit-based scholarships are awarded to students with high test-scores and achievements.

The SAT/ACT tests are of course, just a part of your entire college application. While high test-scores alone will not get you accepted, low SAT/ACT scores can be the reason you don’t get accepted.

Suicide Prevention Awareness---Kentucky legislation requires that all middle and high school students receive suicide awareness and prevention information each year prior to September 1st.  We will be offering this training/awareness program, Signs of Suicide, through our academic advising period on Wednesday.  There will be a letter sent home tomorrow that will have more information about how to opt your student out of this event, if you choose.
