Weekly Update, January 11th, 2016

Good COLD Sunday afternoon to all!  I hope this finds you in a warm and toasty spot today!

Our first Commitment to Graduate (C2G) event was quite a success last week with all of our high school groups.  We asked each and every student to make both a verbal and written to commitment to graduate from high school, in addition to state their future goals and plans.  We were very pleased at the number of students who know what their game plan is and how they are going to achieve it.  Some were not as certain, especially with the 9th and 10th grade groups, but that is to be expected at this point.  Our message to our students was simply this—whatever you set as your purposes or goals, we are here to help you obtain those! We are now planning our Parent Advisory Conference and will let everyone know as  soon as we get that date finalized!

RHS Band News

Several students participated this past weekend in the All District at Western Kentucky University.  Those students who were invited to participate in this event are as follows:

Congratulations to these students on such a prestigious honor and for representing our school in this manner.  RHS Band students will also be representing our program this coming weekend during the WKU Honors Band program!  Good luck to all who are participating.

RHS Swim News (by Mrs. Sherry Bouldin)

The Swimming Panthers were back in the water competitively on Saturday, January 9. The team attended the Best of the West meet held annually at Bowling Green High School.  Several of Coach Toni Hall’s athletes finished in the top ten of their events. Individual swimmer results are as follows:

Morgan Bryant – 50 Free (32.44), 100 Free (1:16.56). Both of these are personal best times for Bryant – taking a little over two and a half seconds off her 100 free time.

Ben Slack – 200 IM (2:34.66) for 10th place, 100 Fly (1:10.49) for 10th place

Katie Paul – 50 Free (35.63), 100 Free (1:19.19) – both are personal best times for Paul.

Katie Holloman – 50 Free (30.87), 100 Free (1:08.87). Holloman took a little over 2 seconds of her 100 free time for a personal best.

Cole Celsor – 50 Free (28.62)

Dillon Porter – 50 Free (31.90), 100 Breast (1:21.95) for 10th place. Porter took 2.24 seconds off his 100 Breast time from the previous meet at WKU for a season best time in that event.

Kate Bouldin – 100 Fly (1:12.25), 500 Free (6:09.46) for 6th place

The girls’ relay team placed in the top ten for both of their events. K Paul, M Bryant, K Holliman, and K Bouldin shaved 4.96 seconds from their 200 Medley Relay time to place 9th overall – they were seeded 11th going in to the meet. The female swimmers only managed to trim a quarter of a second from their 200 Free Relay which earned them the 10th place spot for that event. The girls to continue to reduce their relay times with each meet.

The swimmers will be back in action this Thursday night, January 14 at the Carpenter Center. This will be a dual meet featuring the Panthers and the Cougars. It is also Senior Night for both teams.

*If you haven’t seen our swimming Panthers in action, Senior night would be a great time to do this and to help us honor our senior students!

RJSHS Archery News

The Archery team was in action this past weekend at Auburn Elementary.  The middle school team placed 8th overall!  The team, under the direction of Jeramy Rust, continues to improve and build upon their current talents and strengths!  The team will travel this weekend for a tournament at Chandlers and we wish them the best of luck!

RHS Academic Team

Members of the academic team will travel to Owensboro next Saturday to compete in the National History Bowl.  Last year, our team secured a trip to the National History Bowl competition in Washington, DC and our hopes are to send a team back to that national event to represent Russellville High School!  Good luck to our team and sponsor, Mrs. Jennifer Rogers!
